GROW! started in 2009 with support from community members who recognized the value of gardening not only as a source of food but also as a tool for social connection and health within our community. It is the mission of GROW! to bring the community together to realize the connections that can be made within the community to further enhance its wellbeing. GROW! is a 501c3 nonprofit organization.
GROW! provides gardening opportunities for community members without access to a garden space and for those who wish to garden in a community setting where they can learn from experienced gardeners, including the University of Idaho Master Gardeners, who have permanent plots in the GROW! community garden. GROW! provides gardening education, including information on planting, harvesting, food storage, and composting.
Garden plots are available for GROW! members in two sizes, 4 feet by 20 feet and 10 feet by 20 feet. The smaller plot is $20 per year while the larger plot is $45 per year. In addition, there are 3 high (30″) raised beds available. These are 4 feet by 12 feet and rent for $25 per year. Currently, there are two available for 2018. GROW! membership is $20 per year.
GROW! provides fresh produce for the local food bank, which serves approximately 500 local families each month. It also sells some of its produce at the Bonners Ferry Farmers Market to help cover operating costs at the community garden. GROW! donated over a ton of fresh produce in 2017 alone!
GROW’s future vision includes the establishment of a gathering place for the community in a welcoming garden setting with opportunities to socialize and learn more about gardening in this area. In addition, we want to connect with local schools and provide space for a children’s garden. Please feel free to join us!
GROW! meets on the first and third Wednesdays of most months at 5pm at the University of Idaho Extension Office, 6447 Kootenai Street, Bonners Ferry ID. The office is located behind the courthouse, in the same building with Boundary County Ambulance. Call 208-267-3235 for more information.
